The title on this glass negative records a burial of A.E.F. sailors, dated May 22, 1920, though the record notes that the title comes from unverified data written by the National Photo Company. The studio, which worked in Washington, D.C., during the early twentieth century, documented public ceremonies and military events, and its negatives later came to the Library of Congress. The emulsion shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating, which is typical of glass plates of this age. Read against the period, the image records how the country marked the return and loss of men who had served overseas after the First World War.
