Fairfax Hall is the name printed across this crate label, which sets it apart from the many apple labels on the same board. Brand labels like this one were pasted onto wooden crates of apples so that buyers could recognize a grower's fruit at market and in shops, and the "Solid Pack" wording was a common claim meaning the crate was filled tightly with fruit. Crate art of this kind, often bright and colorful, was a major form of advertising in the early 20th century, when apples were shipped long distances by rail. Look closely at the lettering and illustration to see how growers tried to make their fruit stand out.
