Fairfax Hall's name is the detail that sets this crate label apart from the many apple labels on the same board. Crate labels like this one were pasted onto wooden shipping boxes so that buyers, often at distant city markets, could recognize a grower's brand at a glance. "Solid Pack" refers to the practice of packing fruit tightly and evenly across the layer so the top apples looked much like the rest, a selling point that growers in the early twentieth century used to build trust. Labels of this kind were printed in bright lithographed colors, and their artwork often shows orchards, fruit, or idealized rural scenes that helped market the contents.
