The name on this label, Symms Sunny Slope, is the brand a grower used to set his apples apart in a crowded market, and the bright lettering and orchard scene were meant to make a buyer reach for that crate first. Labels like this were printed in color and pasted onto wooden shipping boxes, which traveled by rail to city grocers and wholesalers, so each one was both an advertisement and a shipping tag. Crate labels were printed in large numbers and often thrown away, so surviving examples are now prized as graphic design and as evidence of how American fruit growers marketed their crops in the decades around 1900.
