Few objects capture the mid-century orchard economy as neatly as a crate label. This one, titled "Sunny Idaho Brand," was printed to be pasted on the end of a wooden apple crate, where its bright colors and bold lettering were meant to catch the eye of buyers in crowded produce markets and grocery displays. Idaho's growers used such brand names to set their fruit apart from competitors shipping from Washington, Oregon and California, and the label was as much a sales tool as a shipping marker. Look closely at the lithographed artwork, which was the main way fruit growers promoted regional identity before consumers learned to shop by brand name on packaging.
