Lead with what sets this label apart: it advertises Idaho apples under the Wonder brand, a name chosen to catch the eye of buyers far from the orchards. Crate labels like this one were pasted onto wooden shipping boxes so that a grocer or shopper could recognize a grower's fruit at a glance, and in the early twentieth century that kind of branding was becoming a way for western growers to compete with apples from Washington, Oregon and New York. Idaho's orchards, many of them in the Snake River valley, sent much of their fruit by rail, which made a bold, memorable label a practical selling tool as well as decoration. Look closely at the lettering and colors, since they reflect the commercial art style of the period.
