Few surviving fruit crate labels carry a name as specific as this one, where the "A1" brand sits beside the words "Canadian Apples" above the packer's name, the Occidental Fruit Co. Labels like this were pasted onto wooden apple crates so that buyers could identify the grower, the grade and the source at a glance, and in the early twentieth century they doubled as small works of commercial art. Canadian apple labels were often printed in bright chromolithographic colors, showing orchard scenes, ripe fruit or bold lettering meant to stand out on a crowded dock or store shelf. Although the record gives no date, the design reflects the period when fruit packers competed fiercely for buyers and brand names mattered as much as the fruit inside.
