What sets this label apart is its origin: it was issued by the Aurora Orchard Company of Dayton, Washington, a town in the Blue Mountain foothills of the state's southeast corner. Crate labels like this one were pasted onto wooden apple boxes so that a grower's brand would stand out to buyers in distant markets, often in bright color lithography. Washington's apple trade grew considerably in the early twentieth century as irrigation and rail links opened new orchard land, and labels such as this one were part of how growers competed for attention and reputation.
