Silver Apron is the broad, pale sheet of granite that slopes down beside the Merced River in Yosemite Valley, and it gets its name from the way water sheets across it and catches the light. Photographers working in the valley through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries returned to this stretch of rock often, drawn by the contrast between the smooth stone and the dark conifers and cliffs that rise behind it. Pictures like this one helped build the public image of Yosemite as a place of natural wonder, and they still show how little the basic shape of the valley has changed.
