From Cemetery Ridge, south of the town of Gettysburg, the view looks across the open fields that Confederate troops crossed on the afternoon of July 3, 1863. The title's phrase, "the High Water Mark of the Rebellion," refers to the farthest point the attack reached before it broke against Union lines near a stone wall at the center of the ridge. Northern writers used the phrase to describe the battle as a turning point in the war, and the ground itself, with its low walls and gentle slopes, still makes the distance Pickett's men had to cover easy to grasp.
