Here Theodore Roosevelt stands in a cavalry officer's uniform beside a man the caption names only as Dr. Cross. Roosevelt had gained fame as colonel of the Rough Riders in the 1898 Spanish-American War, and his cavalry dress recalled that service. Stereograph cards like this one, viewed through a stereoscope, were popular parlor items in the early 1900s, bringing public figures into homes in near three-dimensional form. The record comes from an old caption card and is unverified, so the exact date and the identity of Dr. Cross should be treated with caution.
