Theodore Roosevelt sits cross-legged on the ground in uniform, surrounded by Army officers, a far looser pose than most formal portraits of him. The record dates the picture to 1901, the year he went from the vice presidency to the presidency after William McKinley's assassination in September. Roosevelt had won national fame as colonel of the Rough Riders in the 1898 Spanish-American War, and images like this one reinforced his reputation as a vigorous, outdoor leader. The data comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified, so the exact occasion and setting remain uncertain.
