Filed under Theodore Roosevelt's San Juan campaign, this night scene of soldiers gathered beside a lantern-lit tent suggests the waiting that came before the fighting. In the summer of 1898, American volunteers, including Roosevelt's Rough Riders, were camped near Santiago in eastern Cuba during the Spanish-American War, and the assault on the San Juan Heights followed on July 1. Nights like this were spent in cramped, damp camps, sharing rumor and rationing supplies. The picture is worth a closer look for its quiet mood, where the lantern light, rather than the battle, is the focus.
