Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president, sat for many portraits, and a globe at his side fits a man who read widely about geography and who later traveled far beyond the country's borders. He went on African big-game and natural history expeditions after leaving office in 1909, and in 1913 and 1914 he journeyed through the Brazilian interior on the River of Doubt. The record does not give a date or photographer, so the exact occasion is unclear. Still, the pairing of a leather chair with a globe was a common studio convention meant to suggest learning, authority, and a worldly outlook.
