Five Points, where Seventh and Lehman Streets meet in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, was a busy crossroads in the late 1800s, and this photograph catches it at a time when horse-drawn carts and wagons still did most of the work of moving goods through town. The record dates the print to roughly 1880 to 1900 and tentatively credits the photographer as Harpel, a name tied to Lebanon. Its subject tags point to carts and wagons alongside everyday city life, so the picture is as much about the street's daily traffic as about the intersection itself. Looking closely at the vehicles, the people and the buildings shows how a small Pennsylvania town worked before automobiles arrived.
