Catalogued under the name Wm. D. Upshaw, this glass negative carries a title the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, though the Library of Congress has not verified it. The negative is dated to roughly 1918 to 1921, when the company, based in Washington, D.C., produced large numbers of portraits and views of people and events on glass plates. Herbert A. French gave it to the Library in 1947. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of the original coating, a common condition in glass negatives of this age.
