The title on this glass negative reads "Paul B. Johnson, Miss.," and the "Miss." may stand for Mississippi, though the National Photo Company's titles were taken from unverified notes on the negative or its sleeve. The company operated in Washington, D.C., from about 1906 to 1936, making large numbers of portraits and views, and this plate's date of roughly 1918 to 1921 comes from other negatives in the same range. The record notes streaks and blemishes caused by deterioration of the original coating, a common condition in glass plates of this age. The collection reached the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
