A wagon convoy carrying food and supplies to soldiers is the subject here, a scene that the war's logistics made essential and that is easy to overlook beside battle pictures. Imogene Robinson painted the original scene, and C. Tomkins engraved it, so the image reflects a later artist's view of the period. Supply shortages were a constant problem for Revolutionary armies, and getting flour, salted meat, and other provisions to troops in the field could decide how long they could hold a position. The engraving was made around 1877, when interest in the Revolution ran high during the centennial era.
