From the International Hotel, this view looks east over the rooftops of Virginia City, the Nevada mining town that boomed after silver was discovered on the Comstock Lode in 1859. The Library holds only one half of the original stereograph pair, so the image lacks the second lens that would have given the scene depth when viewed through a stereoscope. Cards like this, issued in series such as *Gems of California Scenery*, were popular parlor items in the 1860s, and the town's buildings clinging to the steep hillside show how quickly the settlement had spread across difficult ground.
