The Imperator was a Hamburg America Line liner that ranked among the largest ships afloat when it entered service in 1913, so an arrival picture from that year captures a moment of real public interest. Bain News Service photographers were sent to cover such events so that newspapers could run pictures soon after they happened. The title and date come from caption information the agency wrote on the negatives, which has not been independently verified, so the exact circumstances are best read with that in mind. Even so, the image shows how the debut of a new transatlantic giant was recorded for the press at the time.
