Few details survive for this glass negative beyond its title, which describes the arrival of gifts for German soldiers, and the Bain News Service caption that the Library of Congress has kept with it. The George Grantham Bain Collection holds some 40,000 negatives from the Bain News Service, a Manhattan photo agency that sold pictures to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. Its wartime images often showed relief efforts and charitable shipments, so a scene like this one would have been made for a press audience curious about how civilians on both sides of the conflict supported their troops. Because the date and place are not recorded, the title is the best guide to the picture's purpose.
