Prince Adalbert, the ship named in this negative's title, was a German armored cruiser of the Prinz Adalbert class, launched in 1901 for the Imperial German Navy. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news pictures from the early 1900s, recorded this title from caption data that the Library of Congress describes as unverified, so the identification deserves some caution. Warships of this period were popular subjects for press photographers, who saw them as emblems of national strength in the years before the First World War. The ship itself was sunk by a British submarine in the Baltic Sea in October 1915.
