Yale's freshman rowing eight is the subject here, a crew of students posed as a unit in the way Bain News Service staff often shot athletic teams. The glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, which holds the work of a New York news photography business that operated from the early 1900s into the 1920s and supplied images to newspapers. The record gives no firm date, and the title itself is marked as unverified, so the exact year and the names of the oarsmen remain uncertain. Still, the picture reflects a sporting tradition that drew large crowds and press attention, when intercollegiate rowing on the Hudson and New England waters was a major spectator event.
