This glass negative records a Yale class of 1899, one of the many college class portraits the Bain News Service made during its years of active work in New York. The Bain agency, founded by George Grantham Bain around 1899, sold news photographs to newspapers and magazines, and its collection now holds more than 40,000 negatives. Because the record notes the title came from unverified caption information, the exact date and the number of men pictured are not confirmed here. Still, the piece shows how commercial news photographers documented university life in the early twentieth century, when class groups were a standard subject.
