Few liners of its day drew as much attention on the New York waterfront as the Imperator, the Hamburg America Line ship that was the largest vessel afloat when it entered service in 1913. This glass negative from the Bain News Service is titled as the ship docking, a routine but closely watched task for a hull of that size. Bain's photographers worked the city's piers constantly, and images like this one show how much manpower and careful maneuvering a giant liner needed to reach its berth. The record gives no date, so the picture is best read as a glimpse of the prewar era of transatlantic prestige.
