Issued under the Four Minute Men banner, this poster carries a message from the government in Washington to the American public during the First World War. The Four Minute Men were volunteer speakers who gave short talks of about four minutes in theaters, churches and other public gatherings, urging support for war bonds, conservation and other home-front efforts. The program was organized in 1917 by the Committee on Public Information, the federal agency responsible for wartime propaganda. Its reliance on brief, local speeches to reach ordinary citizens shows how the federal government sought to mobilize a nation before the age of broadcast media.
