Titled simply *The marriage*, this hand-colored lithograph was published in New York by Nathaniel Currier around 1847, before his partnership with James Ives. Currier's shop issued inexpensive prints on many subjects, and workers often colored them by hand so that a single design could reach a wide audience. The print is listed as number 4340 in the Gale Research catalog raisonné of Currier & Ives, the standard reference for tracing the firm's output. Its low price helps explain why such sheets were pasted into albums and hung in homes across the country.
