Titled simply "My Choice," this hand-colored lithograph offers only its title as a clue to its scene, and the record gives no further detail about the figures or setting. It was published by Currier & Ives, the New York firm that produced inexpensive prints in large numbers from the 1830s into the early twentieth century and sold them to households and shops across the country. Coloring was often done by hand, sometimes by teams working in sequence, so copies of the same design can differ in tone. The catalog number, which researchers still use to trace each design, is a useful way into the firm's output. The publication date is given only as a range, between 1856 and 1907, which shows how long popular images could stay in circulation.
