Beyond its title and the 1750 date, the record offers few details about this particular sheet, so its specific origins remain uncertain. Ukiyo-e, or "pictures of the floating world," were woodblock prints produced in Edo-period Japan that showed actors, courtesans, landscapes, and city life for a broad urban audience. If the 1750 date is correct, the print predates the full-color nishiki-e that Suzuki Harunobu popularized in the mid-1760s, so it would likely have used fewer colors, often black outlines with a few tints. Prints like this were inexpensive and made in multiple copies, which explains why so many survive today.
