The record dates this Japanese ukiyo-e print to 1750, which is earlier than the multicolor prints most people associate with the form. Ukiyo-e, meaning "pictures of the floating world," were woodblock prints that showed actors, courtesans, landscapes, and scenes of everyday life in Edo, now Tokyo. Artists drew the designs, while carvers and printers turned them into blocks, so one design could be printed in quantity and sold cheaply. The record names no artist or specific scene, but collectors prize sheets from this period for their fine line work and the handmade paper.
