Labeled as a Japanese ukiyo-e print and dated 1750, this item falls at the early end of a tradition that flourished in Edo, the city now called Tokyo. Ukiyo-e, meaning "pictures of the floating world," depicted actors, courtesans, famous places, and everyday city life, and was made by carving woodblocks that were inked and pressed onto paper. Around 1750 the form had not yet reached the full-color prints that made it famous a few decades later, so early examples are valued for their line work and restrained palette. The record also calls the item a photo print, so the medium and date are worth confirming against the original source before relying on them.
