Beyond its 1750 date and its place in a numbered series of Japanese fine prints, the record offers little detail, so this sheet is best read against its period. Around the mid-eighteenth century, Edo (now Tokyo) was the center of ukiyo-e, the "pictures of the floating world" that showed actors, courtesans, and scenes of city life. Each design was carved into woodblocks, one for each color, and pressed onto paper, which let publishers sell many copies at modest prices. Sheets from this era were often printed in black ink with color added by hand, before the full multicolor prints that spread after the 1760s.
