Printed as the cover of a song sheet, this color lithograph carries the title "All Hail to the Flag of Freedom," issued in Brooklyn by Skaats & Knaebel around 1861. The artwork came from Ferd. Mayer & Co., a New York lithographic firm, and the catalog subjects point to both the flag and Union soldiers. Publishers produced large numbers of patriotic songs in the first years of the Civil War, and their covers doubled as eye-catching advertisements for the music inside, which is why so many have survived.
