Issued in 1861, this sheet music cover carries the title "Hail! Glorious Banner of Our Land," a song that celebrates the national flag just as the Civil War began. Gibson & Co. of Cincinnati, a busy commercial printing center, produced the color lithograph. The copyright is credited to Mrs. Mary Farrell Moore, a reminder that women also held rights to wartime songs. Covers like this one were meant to catch the eye in shop windows and parlors, so their patriotic imagery worked as advertising as well as sentiment.
