Machines on parade rather than at work in a field give this 1922 view of tractors its particular character. The picture is a glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection, a commercial studio that recorded news events and public life in the early twentieth century. By the early 1920s, tractors were becoming a more common sight on American farms, and a parade built around them shows how quickly mechanical power was taking the place of horse teams. The negative shows streaks and blemishes from natural deterioration of its coating, a reminder of how fragile these materials are.
