Fordson tractors, pictured here on a 1922 glass negative, belong to a machine that changed American farming within a few years of its arrival. Ford's company began building the Fordson in 1917, and its low price and simple design made it one of the first mass-produced tractors, letting many farms replace horses and mules with engine power. The negative comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio whose work was widely used for publicity and records of the period. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass reflect the aging of its original coating, which is worth noticing when viewing the image.
