A Fordson tractor leads the procession here, with a Universal Tractor banner strung across the front of the machine, which tells you this was a dealer or manufacturer showing its wares rather than a simple farm outing. Fordson tractors, built by Henry Ford's company beginning in 1917, were among the first mass-produced tractors and did much to bring gasoline power to American and British farms in the years after World War I. Parades like this one were a common way for implement makers and dealers to win over farmers, who could see the machines moving in person. The banner and the open road around the tractor give a good sense of how these demonstrations were staged for a rural crowd.
