Leaf 49 of a sketchbook, this graphite drawing records a pair of houses at 10 and 12 East 55th Street in Manhattan, with close attention to their roof dormers. It dates to 1880, just a year after the partnership of McKim, Mead & White was formed, when the firm was building a reputation for architecture that drew on historic styles. Sketches like this one show how the architects studied the details of city rowhouses, such as the placement of windows, gables, and rooflines, while working out their own designs. The economical pencil lines still make the dormers and cornices easy to read on the page.
