Frederick Gebhard was a wealthy New York clubman whose 1880s romance with the actress Lillie Langtry drew wide press attention, and that gossip still clings to his name. The caption card gives no date, so this sitting cannot be firmly placed in his life. George Grantham Bain, a New York news photographer, supplied images like this one to newspapers, and the heavy retouching on the print reflects the work of preparing a photograph for reproduction.
