Few images from the Crimean War show the routine of a cavalry camp as plainly as this view of the cookhouse of the 8th Hussars. Roger Fenton made it around 1855, during the months he spent in the Crimea photographing the British army for a London publisher, working with a large camera and paper negatives. The salted paper print, a process that produced softer, warmer tones than the later albumen prints, captures the camp's everyday setting. Fenton's Crimean work is often cited as one of the first sustained photographic records of a war.
