Timothy Pickering, a Massachusetts-born officer and politician, appears here in a mezzotint engraved by T.B. Welsh from an engraving by J.B. Longacre, which the record credits to a painting by Gilbert Stuart, the leading portraitist of the early republic. Pickering served in Washington's cabinet as Postmaster General and then Secretary of War, and later as Secretary of State under Washington and John Adams, posts that placed him at the center of disputes over foreign policy in the 1790s. Because the caption card records no date, the plate's exact year is uncertain, but the chain of engraved reproductions it describes was typical of how Stuart's likenesses of public men reached a wider audience.
