Its title, *The savages let loose, or The cruel fate of the Loyalists*, states the print's argument before any detail is studied. Published in London in March 1783, while the American war was moving toward settlement, it was sold by W. Humphrey on the Strand and belongs to the wave of British satirical prints that dramatized the plight of colonists who had remained loyal to the Crown. Its subjects, scalping and lynching, point to the violence that British commentators associated with the rebel cause and with Native warfare. Such images were meant to stir sympathy for the refugees and to press the question of whether those who had stayed loyal would be left to their fate.
