The only identifying detail for this negative is the word "Hicks," a title the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and the library has not verified whom or what it refers to. Its date of about 1922 is inferred from other negatives in the same range. The National Photo Company was a Washington, D.C., studio that made a large body of photographs on glass plates in the early twentieth century, and this group reached the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. Viewers should expect streaks and other blemishes, which come from the natural deterioration of the original coatings on the glass.
