A glass negative titled for C.J. Hepburn, a man whose identity and occasion the record does not document, carries a date of about 1922 that is inferred from neighboring negatives in the same batch. It belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, whose studio produced portraits and street and event views in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Look for streaks and small blemishes, which come from the deterioration of the original emulsion coatings and are typical of glass plates of this age.
