Havemeyer Hall, a classical stone building on Columbia University's Morningside Heights campus, was named for the sugar refiner Henry O. Havemeyer, whose family gift helped pay for it. The campus was being rebuilt in this period as the university moved uptown from Madison Avenue, and the architects McKim, Mead & White shaped many of its buildings in a Beaux-Arts style. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American cities and landmarks in the early 1900s. The view shows how the new campus was meant to look: formal, orderly, and built to project the university's ambitions.
