A silkscreen poster from 1936 marks Memorial Day, held each May 30, and its title line gives the date plainly, with the initials "JCW" identifying the designer. It was produced under the Federal Art Project, one of the arts programs of the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression, which employed artists to make posters for public information and civic events. The subjects listed for the piece, veterans and families in the 1930s, point to a holiday that had long been observed with parades, flags, and visits to cemeteries. The back of the board carries a date stamp from April 1937, a small reminder of how these posters moved through government offices after they were printed.
