Steel trestles rise above the tracks in this snowy rail yard, where a line of passenger cars sits under a heavy winter sky. Railyards of this kind were the working heart of American railroading in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when trestles carried lines over low ground and ravines and passenger coaches were serviced and staged between runs. The scene is worth studying for the way the snow softens the hard geometry of iron and timber, turning a busy industrial site into something close to quiet. The record gives no photographer or exact date, so the picture is best read as a glimpse of a typical winter day in a rail yard of its era.
