Rail cars sit lined up on a siding while a corrugated metal shed rises behind them, a common sight at freight and passenger yards across the country in the early to mid twentieth century. Yards like this one were busy hubs where cars were staged, serviced and switched between trains, and the plain sheet-metal sheds were built cheaply and quickly to shelter equipment and workers from the weather. Pictures of such scenes are valuable to historians because they record the working landscape of the railroad, with its utilitarian buildings and rolling stock, rather than the polished stations that often appeared in promotional material.
