Carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills of South Dakota, the monument is best known for the four presidents whose heads rise roughly 60 feet tall: Washington, Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Lincoln. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum began the work in 1927, and it continued under his son Lincoln Borglum after Gutzon's death in 1941, with the project halting in October 1941. Roosevelt's inclusion reflected his role in building the nation's conservation system and expanding its territory, themes that give his carved face its place among the others.
