Four enormous granite faces, Washington, Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Lincoln, rise from the Black Hills of South Dakota, and the subject sits on a board that groups it under Theodore Roosevelt. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum began the carving in 1927 and worked on the mountain until his death in 1941, after which his son Lincoln Borglum finished the project in 1941. The faces were meant to represent the nation's growth over its first 150 years, and the monument remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in the American West.
